Elly Budiman-Mak, MD, MPH

Dr. Budiman- Mak joined the HSR&D Center at Hines VA Hospital in 1986, with a five-year multi-clinic randomized control trial entitled, "Foot Orthosis in Preventing Foot Deformity in Rheumatoid Arthritis."  It has been a rewarding and long-lasting relationship.  During the study, Foot Function Index (FFI) was developed. This measure gained international acclaim as the pioneer in foot health status measure and is widely used by clinicians, surgeons, and researchers.  Subsequently Foot Function Index Revised (FFI-R) and multicultural adaptation of FFI was also developed and is now available in more than 20 different foreign languages. 

Dr. Budiman-Mak earned her MD from the University of Indonesia in 1961.  She taught at the University in Indonesia for ten years, then completed internal medicine and rheumatology training at VHA Hines in 1976, and continued her career in VA. In 1983 she earned MPH degree from the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois in Chicago, in 1989-1991 she received a VACO scholarship and received an MS degree in Clinical Trial design and statistics. From the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. At Hines, Dr. Budiman-Mak was an attending physician in internal medicine and rheumatology and was involved in patient care and in teaching house staff as well as medical students. She is a Professor of Medicine at Loyola University, Stritch School of Medicine.  Her primary research interests are related to management and outcomes in chronic diseases. She served as principal investigator on numerous studies.  She received funding from a private, not-for-profit foundation as well as VACO. She developed several Patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) instruments, to measure patients function following treatment of foot and shoulder problems: those are Foot Function Index (FFI), shoulder pain and disability index (SPADI), Foot Function Index Revised (FFIR) in long and short forms. She was the recipient of the VA RR&D grant titled, "Home-Based Exercise and Nutrition Program for Pain Control in Overweight Elderly Osteoarthritis of the Knee."  She was a co-investigator of a funded project titled, "NSAID Related Adverse Events: Evaluating Risk Using Clinical Information."  PI- Todd Lee Pharm D, PhD. To study NSAIDs associated cardiovascular morbidities in Veterans.  Her current work is about adverse effects of obesity and diabetes on the lower extremities, and had published numerous peer reviewed articles about this work. The goal of her study has been about patient- centered outcomes and improvement of quality of life.
