Noteworthy News of FY2019
Bella Etingen, PhD, helped a team of VA psychologists who provide PTSD care develop and refine the content of a training module on shared decision-making for PTSD treatment planning. The training, which provides 1.0 CEs, is now live on TMS.
Charlesnika Evans, PhD was invited to speak at ID Week in the Symposium Session on Advances in Epidemiologic Research Methods. Her presentation, “How Do We Make that Happen? Implementation Science Methods” was presented on October 6, 2018.
Charlesnika Evans was approved to serve as an editorial board member to the American Journal of Infection Control for a three-year term beginning January 1, 2019.
Charlesnika Evans, PhD gave the Keynote Presentation at The Madison VA Research Symposium for VA Research Week on May 13, 2019. The title of her presentation was, “The Path to Least Resistance, Bugs and Drugs in Spinal Cord Injury and Beyond.”
A week later, May 22, 2019, Charlesnika Evans, PhD did a webinar for the Antimicrobial Stewardship Task Force. The title of the webinar was, “Antimicrobial Use and Stewardship in the SCI Population.”
Carol Kostovich, PhD, RN, CHSE, was selected to serve a 2-year term as a grant reviewer for Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
Sherri LaVela, PhD RCOMFI instrument was published in Plos One. The title of the article, “A Tolerability Assessment of New Respiratory Devices Developed for Health Care Personnel: A Randomized Simulated Clinical Study.”
Karen Saban PhD, RN, APRN, CNRN, FAHA was inducted into the Academy – Fellow in the American Academy of Nurses in Washington DC, November 2018. She also received some press in the Office of Nursing Services Bulletin of November 2018 Issue #51 for her significant research contribution to understand how stress, related to one’s social context, increases disparity in cardiovascular disease in disadvantaged African-Americans.
Karen Saban PhD, RN, APRN, CNRN, FAHA, was in the “Office of Nursing Services (ONS) Spotlight” in an article on August 15, 2019 titled, “Dr. Karen Saban Testing Effectiveness of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction.”

Kevin Stroupe, PhD was honored with a “Best Poster” award for his poster, “Veterans Experiences with the Veterans’ Choice Program” at the AcademyHealth meeting in June of 2019.
Katie Suda, PharmD, PhD was presented the 2018 Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy Paper Award, Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists (SIDP), for “Antibiotic expenditures by medication, class, and healthcare setting in the United States, 2010-2015” published in Clinical Infectious Diseases.
Katie Suda, PharmD, PhD and Kevin Stroupe, PhD were published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. It was Katie Suda first publication in that journal. The article was published on October 9, 2018. The title is, “Receipt of Overlapping Opioid and Benzodiazepine Prescriptions among Veterans Dually enrolled in Medicare Part D and the Department of Veteran Affairs A Cross-sectional Study.” The article is likely to have a high impact. The paper was highlighted as part of journal watch.
Frances Weaver, PhD stepped down as the center director of CINCCH after more than 10 years in this role. She expects to increase her time conducting research and mentoring fellow and junior faculty.
Fran Weaver, PhD was appointed as the chair of the Informatics Panel for the Scientific Merit Review Panel for Health Services Research & Development service (April 2019).
Fran Weaver, PhD was invited to serve on the guideline panel committee for the Spinal Cord Medicine Consortium to develop a guideline for bone health in spinal cord injury. (Oct. 2018)
Fran Weaver, PhD was a member of the International Society of Clinical Densitonometry (ISCD) panel that developed guidelines for bone mineral density testing in spinal cord injury published in the Journal of Clinical Densitometry. In press; available online 3 August 2019.
Saul Weiner, MD presented on a conference call of over 300 Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) on January 10, 2019. The title of his presentation was, “Unannounced Standardized Veterans: A quality improvement effort to disseminate best practices across Supportive Services for Veteran Families.”
Saul Weiner, MD presented two presentations at the Oslo Communication in Healthcare Education and Research (OCHER) Conference in Oslo Norway on 4C coding and contextual error. The title of his first oral presentation was, “Content Coding for Contextualization of Care (4C): Assessing Attention to Life context in Care Planning.” The title of the second was, “Changing how Physicians Communicate to Reduce Contextual Error in a Large Healthcare Organization.”
Saul Weiner, MD served as the 2019 Visiting Professor in the Katherine Swan Ginsburg Program in Humanism in Medicine at Harvard’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center where he presented two grand rounds: Contextualizing Medical Decisions to Individualize Care, and On Becoming a Healer: The Journey From “Patient Care” to Caring About Your Patients, and met with faculty, residents and students, May 29-31.
